SCOPE

Ards Training and Resource Centre provides daycare support for adults with learning disabilities. The brief was to establish a sensory garden to enhance the well-being and experiences of the Centre’s users. The garden was designed as a therapeutic, accessible, and engaging space that fosters relaxation, interaction, and sensory exploration for service users, their families, and staff.

Key Features:
  • the garden features wide, smooth, and slip-resistant pathways to ensure ease of movement
for wheelchair users and those with mobility challenges.
  • a polytunnel, raised planters and accessible seating areas encourage group interaction and
    exploration for all visitors.
  • a dedicated herb area where visitors can sit and enjoy the soothing aromas.
  • a variety of vibrant, colourful plants and flowers create a visually appealing environment
throughout the seasons. Sculptures and visually interactive features further enrich the
    sensory experience.
  • quiet corners with shaded benches offer peaceful spaces for reflection, relaxation, and
mindfulness. Seating areas are designed to promote social interaction and group activities.
  • the use of low-maintenance, flower-rich plant species enhances the garden’s biodiversity
and sustainability, requiring minimal upkeep and conserving resources. Additionally, toxic
plants have been excluded from the planting palette to ensure the safety of all visitors.

OUTCOME

The Sensory Garden has successfully fulfilled its goal of providing a welcoming, therapeutic, and accessible outdoor space. By prioritizing sensory stimulation, inclusivity, and sustainability, the garden has significantly improved the quality of life and experiences for all who visit and engage with it.
