SCOPE
We were appointed to the Integrated Consultant Team (ICT) to improve access to the site. Pedestrian access to the Arts Centre was unsatisfactory in terms of gradient and conflicting vehicular access to adjacent properties. For public health and safety reasons part of the site was also secured by fencing, inhibiting pedestrian access to the Centre.
Our solution covered:
- new kerbing
- footpath resurfacing using a mixture of natural stone paving and high-quality granite aggregate paving
- street lighting
- street furniture
- planting included a mix of semi-mature trees and ground cover shrubs
- we installed a sinuous path to achieve a 1:21 gradient, and eliminate the need for handrails
The proposed footways and street lighting for upgrade are to be adopted upon completion by the Department for Infrastructure.
OUTCOME
Access to the Arts Centre was significantly upgraded by both the planting and structural elements, improving public enjoyment of the Centre and its surroundings. Safety was also enhanced through the surfacing, lighting and choice of materials.
